Cllr Butler suggested officials look at the idea of a prohibition order where several campervans park-up along the foreshore
A Green party councillor has asked Louth County Council to examine how they can prevent large numbers of campervans parking overnight in inappropriate areas.
Marianne Butler told the Dundalk Municipal District's monthly meeting that she had been contacted by residents impacted by anti-social behaviour.
Cllr Butler suggested officials look at the idea of a prohibition order where several campervans park-up along the foreshore and the Deputy Chief Executive Thomas McEvoy said he would examine the legislation involved:
"We want to encourage tourists to come to County Louth, but when it comes to camper vans, we have to provide designated areas for them. And I know there's plenty of other councillors who have been calling for this over the years. I suppose probably since COVID, so many people have camper vans now. And it's not an issue when one or two park up for a night.
The problem is when a number of camper vans come to a particular area and there's issues around their chemical toilets, waste, and then people living nearby who are just trying to go to bed, get up and do a day's work in the morning, but obviously the people in the camper vans are holidaying and creating noise and being a bit antisocial at times.
So it's that the council use mechanisms in those particular cases, not to allow camper vans park in particular areas. And I suppose it's just a case of enforcement when it does get out of hand."
