The Fianna Fáil councillor is suggesting both options being considered as a 'short term fix'

Extending a bus route and the Western Relief Road in Dundalk are being suggested as a solution to improve road safety in the Haggardstown area.

Fianna Fáil Shane McGuinness made the call at Louth County Council's monthly meeting.

Cllr. McGuinness says that action is needed as the planned upgrade of the Sexton's junction is some time away.

"The accidents are just becoming very high on a weekly basis. We're trying to look at options - the Active Travel Scheme may not happen for the next 12 months or 18 months.

I'm looking at options of possibly extending the bus route out into Haggardstown where there's many, many thousands of houses out there now with no way of getting into town.

That's one option that we could do as a short-term fix.

The other option also is the other thing I've been talking about for many years now is the Western Relief Road extension that goes from the Marlbog Road up to Wuxi. That could be extended out and that would totally alleviate all the traffic going to Sexton's Junction where they could go up onto the Inner Relief Road and up to Xerox.

That would solve the problem. I want action from the council and I'm hoping that they'll come back to me and alleviate some of the problems we're having at the moment in the Haggardstown, Dublin Road, Blackrock area.

The Western Relief Road would be coming from Claremont across Marlbog, up to the front of Wuxi and out onto the Southern Link Road. And obviously over the next number of years it'll extend right out to the Ballymac roundabout.
