Cordons were put in place on Monaghan Street overnight

Police are appealing for information following a security alert in the Monaghan Street area of Newry overnight.

It began after they received a report of a suspicious object in the area shortly before midnight.

Army bomb disposal experts have made safe the device, which has been declared a viable explosive device.

It's been removed for further examination.

Cordons have been removed and Monaghan Street has now re-opened.

Local Sinn Féin MLA and Minister for Infrastructure Liz Kimmons has revealed it was left at the constituency office she shares with MP Dáire Hughes.

She described it as "a disgraceful and cowardly act".
