The Newtown Blues man, McDonnell, had a distinguished career in the red and white spanning more than a decade, having made 103 senior appearances for Louth.

It's been officially confirmed that Louth will be without the services of stalwart Andy McDonnell after he has announced his retirement from inter-county football.

It follows the news earlier this month that Bevan Duffy has also stepped aside from the wee county's set up.

The Newtown Blues man McDonnell had a distinguished career in the red and white spanning more than a decade, having made 103 senior appearances for Louth.

McDonnell came back into the inter county team after 4 years out last year to help Louth achieve Delaney Cup success. He lined out in midfield helping secure Louth's first provincial title in 68 years.

Louth GAA posted saying:

"Andy is one of the most naturally gifted footballers to grace our county and words will never match the high standards he set time & time again."
